Fallbrook High School’s girls water polo team began the 2013-14 season by winning two games and losing three in the Dec. 5-7 Rancho Bernardo Tournament.
The results gave Fallbrook 12th place among the 28 teams in the tournament. The Warriors had wins over Eastlake and Poway while losing to Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Buena Vista, and Patrick Henry. “I was a little disappointed we lost to RBV,” said Fallbrook coach Sean Redmond. “I felt we had that game. We just weren’t able to finish it.”
The Warriors played Eastlake and Rancho Bernardo at Rancho Bernardo’s pool Dec. 5. Fallbrook began play with a 15-8 win over Eastlake. “That was a really good first game for us,” Redmond said.
Rancho Bernardo took a 10-4 victory over the Warriors. “Rancho Bernardo was a really well coached and disciplined team. We’re a young team,” Redmond said.
The Warriors have only six seniors on their 13-girl roster. Three of Fallbrook’s 2012-13 starters are on this season’s team.
Fallbrook’s only Dec. 6 game was played at the Del Norte High School pool. The Warriors obtained a 5-3 triumph against Poway. “That was definitely a physical game. It went back and fourth until the fourth quarter when we were finally able to pull it out,” Redmond said.
Fallbrook led the Titans by a 3-2 score entering the fourth period and had a 4-3 lead with one minute remaining before scoring the final goal of the game.
The Westview High School pool was the site of Fallbrook’s two Dec. 7 games. The first was a 6-5 overtime loss to Rancho Buena Vista. “We were leading that game for most of it,” Redmond said.
Fallbrook held a 4-3 advantage entering the fourth period. The Longhorns scored with 45 seconds left in regulation before scoring the winning goal in sudden-death overtime. “That kind of stung a little bit,” Redmond said.
The Warriors concluded the tournament with a 10-6 loss to Patrick Henry. “The Patrick Henry game was a great game even though we lost,” Redmond said. “We played them tough for 2 1/2 quarters.”
The score was 4-4 in the third period before the Patriots scored four quick goals. “We were in that game all the way until the middle of the third period,” Redmond said.
