FALLBROOK – Live Oak School held its second Family Math Night titled “Gellin with Geometry” which included eight hands-on stations, designed for all K-6 grades, and uniquely organized into multiple activity levels on Jan.23. Live Oak principal Lillian Perez said, “We had over 200 families exploring math together at different stations.”
Students of all ages were able to participate in three different levels of geometry geared math centers. Some of the parents were having just as much fun as the students. The different math centers included (1) exploring 3-D shapes, using the senses to explore and make connections between 2-D and 3-D geometry, (2) area-playing with tiles, dice and pipe cleaners to develop concepts in measurement and the children’s favorite station, (3) structure- building with straws to discover strongest shapes plus five other centers.
The goal of the math nights is to provide a fun, shared experience that promotes family involvement with math and builds strong family-school partnerships. Students were excited about math and learning different techniques and strategies to solve problems. This marks the first of many other Family Nights that Live Oak Elementary will be hosting for its community.
