FALLBROOK – On July 31, the nine Boys & Girls Clubs of San Diego County got together to kick-off a nationwide movement. Club staff used two vans to drive throughout the county and share the message that when school is out, clubs are in.
With August marking the beginning of the school year for most of the local school districts, the van tour was on a mission to ensure that after-school hours were also a part of the conversation.
Starting at KUSI’s Good Morning San Diego at 6:30 a.m. along with stops in cities like Fallbrook, Oceanside, and Carlsbad, the message of the day spread quickly. The tour concluded the day at Embarcadero Park South with a celebratory rally featuring live music from Jammin Z90.
Brian Astredo, director of development for the Boys & Girls Clubs of North County, was on one of the vans to help promote the movement. “It’s important for us to share with children and their parents that when school gets out, no child should go unsafe or unguided,” said Astredo. “Boys & Girls Clubs offer children a safe environment where they can come spend their after-school hours in a fun and productive way.”
