Fiery crash in Carlsbad leaves suspected drunken driver severely injured

A fiery crash in Carlsbad early today left an allegedly drunken driver severely injured.

The driver apparently lost control shortly after 5 a.m. while heading east on Aviary Parkway and crashed into some trees in the center divider east of Cormorant Drive, Carlsbad police Lt. Mickey Williams said.

The car came to a rest in the westbound lanes and burst into flames, Williams said.

The driver sustained major burn injuries, but managed to get out of the flaming car, according to the lieutenant.
