Deputy and passerby pull cancer patient from wreck

HOMELAND - A cancer patient who fell asleep in his Mini Cooper on Highway 74 and crashed into a water main in Homeland was pulled out of his flooded car by a sheriff's deputy and passerby, an officer said today.

Steven Strohm, 51, of Lake Elsinore, was on his way home from a chemotherapy session at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday on the westbound side when he nodded off in westbound lanes, California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Lassig said.

Strohm's car veered across the highway and plowed into a water main at Sultanas Road, he said.
