CAMP PENDELTON – On Feb. 27, San Onofre School celebrated its first school-wide College and Career Day. The school's counseling department organized the speakers and events to motivate students to be college-bound and career-ready.
There were a variety of presentations and speakers to appeal to different interest levels of a K-8 school population. The kindergarten through second graders attended an assembly on the importance of reading by Mrs. Crandall, a Scholastic representative. She shared why reading is essential in each career as she read the book LMNOPeas.
The third graders requested hearing from an engineer, as a follow up to a recent field trip about the math and science of hockey. The fourth through eighth graders had the opportunity to hear from many career presenters, such as a veterinarian, a florist, a physician's assistant, a photographer, engineers, a real estate agent, a district attorney, an electrician, a submarine lieutenant, an insurance agent, a band director, an associate creative director in advertising, a writer, etc.
In addition to hearing the speakers, students also had the opportunity to check out a police car, fire truck, ambulance, and a military truck! They loved crawling through each of the cars, testing out the siren, and talking to the service men and women.
By the end of the day, students were beginning with the end in mind: creating goals for future careers and the steps needed to get there. Students were proactive in thanking many of their presenters as they left the classrooms.
