Sheriff's deputies countywide now carry Naloxone for overdose emergencies

Throughout San Diego County, all Sheriff's deputies on patrol are now equipped with Naloxone, it was announced today, Monday, May 18. Naloxone is used to counter the effects of opioid overdose (heroin, etc.) as it reverses the effect narcotics have on the body.

According to Sheriff's Captain James Bovet, "Deputy Sheriff's at all patrol stations and substations carry Naloxone with them as an important lifesaving tool."

"The decision to supply Naloxone department-wide was made by Sheriff Bill Gore after a successful pilot program that began in July of 2014 at the Santee patrol station," said Bovet.

During the pilot period, Bovet said "Eleven people were revived by deputies after the deputies were called to an overdose emergency."
