SAN DIEGO - At its meeting on Wednesday, June 23, the County Board of Education established a timeline and procedures for filling the District 5 board seat vacated by Doug Perkins, who resigned for long-term health reasons. District 5 runs along the coast from Del Mar to Camp Pendleton.
Individuals wishing to apply for the District 5 appointment must be citizens of California, residents of San Diego County Board of Education District 5, and registered voters. Individuals can verify their residence in San Diego County Board of Education District 5 by visiting the San Diego County Registrar of Voters website, clicking on the "What are my Electing Districts/Officials" tab, and entering their street address.
“I encourage any and all interested candidates to apply,” said County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Randolph E. Ward. “This is a chance for interested members of the community to serve in a countywide capacity to make a difference in the lives of kids.”
To apply for appointment or download an application for the District 5 vacancy, individuals can visit http://www.sdcoe.net/boardvacancy, or request an application by calling (858) 292-3515 or emailing the Board of Education executive assistant at [email protected].
Applications must be submitted no later than Wednesday, July 1 at noon.
The board is expected to interview all eligible candidates, make the appointment, and swear in the new board member at its regular meeting on July 8, 2015. In accordance with provisions of the San Diego County Charter, the board has 45 days from the date of a vacancy to make the appointment.
The vacant seat must be filled from the district in which the vacancy occurs by appointment of a majority of the remaining members of the board. When the appointment is made, there will be three members remaining on the board. The vote of two members will be required to make the appointment.
The appointee will hold office until January 2017. A successor will be elected in 2016 to complete the term ending January 2019.
