SAN DIEGO COUNTY - A driver led California Highway Patrol and Border Patrol officers on a high-speed chase from the San Ysidro border crossing to the San Onofre area near Camp Pendleton early today, Mon., April 11.
The chase along approximately 65 miles of Interstate 5 began at the border at about 1:30 a.m., according to broadcast reports.
It ended after the driver ran over a spike strip placed near the Border Patrol checkpoint on the northbound freeway.
The driver briefly held officers at bay, but was taken into custody after a bean bag round was fired through the car's window.
The driver, whose name was not immediately available, was previously deported, 10News reported.
