Why do they do what they do?

Why do the political parties use a long, costly, time consuming and bureaucratic method to nominate one person to one position (president)? This is not a procedure stated in our constitution. Is it for publicity reasons? Is it so the party officers can manipulate the end results against the will of the “grassroots”?
