It would seem if you are reading this review, you too, if not a child of the 60's are at least aware of the flower-child movement. Which would align you with the creators of "Soul Doctor". It opened April 10 at the Lyceum Space in downtown San Diego.
Reworked for the road, having debuted on Broadway in 2013, the journey of rock star Rabbi Schlomo will only be in San Diego for 24 total performances on its first stop of the world tour. Next stop is Jerusalem, Israel. "Soul Doctor" celebrates God through music. A light-hearted spiritual romp rejoicing in all things Yiddish, it is based on the true story of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach who reached new followers through his inspirational music. Set in 1967, "Soul Doctor" is a relaxed theatrical experience where the audience is invited to participate in the joy and even becomes a significant part of the celebration on stage.
The cast is filled with talent like Ester Rada as Nina Simone. Rada immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia and is regaled as one of Israel's greatest musical success stories. Playing alongside her is Josh Young as the adult Rabbi Carlebach who breathes life into his part. Hilariously funny is Dylan Hoffinger as the young Schlomo. The entire cast is filled with gifted musicians and singers expressing their happiness in dance as they unfold the details of this true story. Here is an extraordinary opportunity to participate in a celebration of love and music for the whole family.
"Soul Doctor" will play until April 22 at the Lyceum Theater. Convenient parking across the street at 225 Broadway Circle is only $10 or park at the Westfield mall and get your ticket stamped for a $2 savings or $8.
