Proposition 12 would improve the lives of animals

We should not be unnecessarily cruel to the animals we raise for food, and that’s why I support Proposition 12.

Prop 12 is a popular referendum that will be on the ballot this November, and it aims to ban the sale of animal products that come from factory farms where calves, breeding pigs and laying hens are confined in cages so small that the animals can barely move around.

Prop 12 represents an important step toward a more humane relationship between humans and the animals on which we depend.

Californians passed a similar law by popular referendum in 2008 that required animals to have enough space to turn around, and since 2015 the sale of shell eggs from facilities that cage their laying hens has been prohibited. Some producers in California, instead of ceasing to cage their animals, have attempted to comply by providing their animals marginally more room in their cages.

Prop 12 would improve on the existing laws by prohibiting caging veal calves, breeding pigs and laying hens at all farms in California, by increasing the amount of space farms allot to each animal and by requiring certain enrichments for animals, like nests and perches for chickens. It would expand the ban on imports of shell eggs to pork, veal and other egg products. These improvements of the current law are sorely needed by all the animals who suffer under barbaric conditions.

It’s time we update California law and lead the nation and world in providing humane treatment to our animals. Join me in voting “yes” on Prop 12 this Nov. 6. Together we can improve the lives of millions of animals.

If passed, this proposition would actually legalize battery cages for egg-laying hens until at least 2022. And after that, it would confine hens inside massive factory sheds that provide only one square foot of floor space per bird! Find out why Californians Against Cruelty, Cages, and Fraud, the Humane Farming Association (HFA), Friends of Animals (FoA), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), and many others are strongly opposing the measure. No one should fall for HSUS's bogus claims that this it will regulate the sale and production of veal and pork from other states. That cynical and constitutionally flawed window dressing will never survive the inevitable years of legal challenges. It was only inserted into the initiative to distract from its massive sell-out to the egg industry. Please visit NO on Proposition 12 website.

Proposition 12 is an outright scam. This measure was co-written by United Egg Producers and would explicitly legalize cruel battery cages in California until at least 2022. And it would forever confine hens inside massive factory farms that restrict hens to only one square foot floor space per bird!
