The incident was first reported at 1:30 p.m. when the motorcycle, which was in the middle lane, was reported to be struck by the SUV. The motorcyclist was down in the #1 lane, resulting in the closure of lanes 1 and 2. The CHP issued the SigAlert at 1:52 p.m. for an unknown duration.

Emergency services, including the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), responded to the scene. Fire crews accessed the crash from the southbound side of the highway. The officer's wife was en route to meet him at the hospital.

As of 2:18 p.m., a tow truck was en route to assist, backing up to the scene from the Old Highway 395 ramp. By 2:25 p.m., the truck had arrived, and additional changeable message signs (CMS) were activated at 2:33 p.m. to inform drivers of the incident and lane closures.
