FCAT offers update on Climate Action Plan

FALLBROOK – Fallbrook Climate Action Team (FCAT) will present a talk by Corinna Contreras, Climate Action Campaign Policy Analyst, on the County’s Updated Climate Action Plan (CAP) on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. on Zoom.

Contreras is a transportation analyst for the Climate Action Campaign. At the University of California, Santa Barbara, she earned her B.A. in Film & Media/Sociology. After receiving her Permaculture Design Certification from the San Diego Sustainable Living Institute her interest in regenerative agriculture, permaculture, and traditional ecological knowledge grew.

She tapped into the local food system to understand how to be more impactful. For her efforts, she was picked as one of 100 idea ambassadors for Berry Good Food Foundation's Berry Good Night 100.

The Climate Action Campaign started with passing San Diego’s groundbreaking, legally binding 100% clean energy Climate Action Plan in 2015. After that, they successfully advocated for 100% clean energy Climate Action Plans in eight cities including San Diego and Encinitas. They also won three Community Choice Energy (CCE) programs in San Diego County including San Diego Community Power which is set to reduce our Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 1.9 million metric tons.

In September, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted to approve the Climate Action Plan which was the first one supported by local environmental groups. Contreras will talk about what’s new with this one.

Groups such as the Sierra Club have challenged the county over its CAPs for over a decade. The goal of the plan is to create net zero emissions at county facilities and in the unincorporated county by 2045. One of the top changes in the plan is to shift to electric-powered buildings in county jurisdictions and aiming to achieve 90% of renewable energy in the unincorporated county by 2030.

FCAT presents monthly (except December) presentations about climate change and mitigation, usually on the last Tuesday of the month on Zoom. To receive the Zoom link, sign up for the group’s eblast at https://fallbrookclimateactionteam.org.
